ALDERLEY ROAD

With its strong modernist form, expressed by a white tiled frame and bays of tinted glazing, 52-56 Alderley Road is a prominent early 1980s commercial building and distinctive landmark in the town of Wilmslow, UK.

The brief was to provide a high quality refurbishment of the existing fabric and a new contemporary solution to extending the building that would both increase the office accommodation and enhance the building's identity and commercial profile.

Stucco was applied over the existing white tile, maintaining the strength and modernist expression of the frame. The ground floor retail units, which lacked visual focus and identity, were enhanced by the addition of a zinc canopy that wraps down to form the main entry into the building.

The new second floor extension is clad in curtain wall glazing and zinc. The existing frame is expressed in the new curtain walling to ensure a sensitive and coherent relationship, whilst the glass itself is tinted to match the original.

Architect and co-designer from feasibility and inception, through to DD and CD for Bid and construction contract.

Following novation of Reid Architects to the contractor under the Design- Build contract, I worked closely with the contractor and sub-consultants to develop the detail of the project and ensure that the design was coordinated on site during construction and successfully delivered.
